MADISON, Wis. (Civic Media) — Kristina Boardman assumed her role as Wisconsin’s new secretary of transportation on Tuesday, marking a historic milestone as the first woman to lead the state’s Department of Transportation (WisDOT).
Gov. Tony Evers appointed Boardman last month, citing her experience within the department. Boardman previously served as deputy secretary and administrator of the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
In her time as deputy secretary, Boardman oversaw operations for the 3,200-employee agency with a 2 year budget over $8 billion.
In a statement, Boardman outlined her priorities for WisDOT, emphasizing workforce support, maximizing federal funding, enhancing technology, and continued investment in transportation safety.
“The opportunity to lead the department I love is a true honor,” Boardman said. “I will build on the progress we’ve made to improve our transportation system and continue to share WisDOT’s story”.
Boardman replaces former secretary Craig Thompson, who left to take a job at UW-Madison.
